Full Description
This rare and imposing stool is an early and fascinating example of huanghuali furniture. The design is of basic Corner-Leg form, but appears to be a precursor of the mature Ming style. The simple, flush-sided top has a simple flat beading at the top and a wonderfully drawn âhorsebellyâ apron. The legs, crafted from thick material are curved on both the inside and outside edges and end in well-formed hoof feet. The generous proportions and unusual use of straight stretchers together with the general ageing of the timber and well worn and patinated surfaces would also indicate an early date for this piece. To date, this is the only example of this type that we have been able to find and as such, this stool is of great importance in the history and study of Classical Chinese Furniture.
